The View on Vu

Michael Vu hired as Assistant Registrar of Voters

Who is Michael Vu?

Conventional media sources tell us that Vu has a political science degree from the University of Utah, worked for seven years in the Salt Lake County Elections Division, and spent the past 3 1/2 years as Elections Chief of Cuyahoga County, Ohio's most populous county and site of infamously long lines and questionable results during the 2004 Presidential Election (conducted under Vu's watch).

As concerned citizens of San Diego County, however, we have a right to know more about our new official's track record than what he puts on his resume.

Though information is still being gathered, here are a few facts:

A study submitted by Representative John Conyers, Jr., Ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, found that in just the 2004 election in Cuyahoga County:

  • 10,000 Ohio citizens lost their right to vote as a result of official registration errors.

  • The Board of Elections (BOE) was notified of the 10,000 disenfranchised voters at least three months in advance of the election and did nothing to address the problem.

  • 8,099 out of 24,472 provisional ballots were ruled invalid-- the highest proportion in the state.

Also under Vu's watch, the elections coordinator and ballot manager were both convicted of illegally rigging the 2004 Presidential Election recount to avoid doing more work. Though we do not currently know if Vu was aware of or sanctioned this deceit before it occurred, he approved of their conduct even after the courts found the officials guilty of their crimes against Democracy.

What action should be taken to protest this incredibly unwise hire?

In light of Mr. Vu's poor administration of Cayahoga County's election in November 2004 Secure Accurate Elections has a number of questions deserving of an answer:

Why is it that SAE and other members of the public have no say as to who conducts our public elections?

Why is there no serious public input allowed as to how our elections are conducted?

How do Michelle Townsend and Michael Vu plan to insure that San Diego County elections are secure, accurate and open to public oversight?

We do not want replays of election failures in Riverside County, Ca. and Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

Our supervisors need to know citizens are interested in the conduct of their elections. We encourage you to call or write your representative on the Board of Supervisors to ask these questions!

SAE and other local progressive and election integrity groups need to go on record in opposition to the hiring of Michael Vu by some sort of public protest. However-- it is SAE's opinion that where we need to focus our energies is the ELECTION of a SD County Supervisor who is sympathetic or at least open to hear our concerns.
